The tomb of Marie-Joly

Born in Versailles, April 8, 1761, Marie-Elisabeth Joly was the daughter of a costume designer who used to play theater. At 7 years old, she already played "Louison" in Le Malade Imaginaire a Molière piece.
She had many suitors, but found a more fervent in Caen, whom she married : Mr Nicolas Fouquet Dulomboy, Captain of Cavalry, Knight of the Order of Malta in St. Louis, Mayor of the municipality of Tassily-Saint-Quentin, owner of the manor of Poussendre, town Tassily.

Shareolder of la comédie française

She played "Dorine" in Tartuffe, "Toinette" in Le Malade Imaginaire, "Martine" in Les Femmes Savantes, "Nicole" in Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme . She became shareholder of la Comédie Française, March 27, 1783.
She fled the noise and loved above all being in the mansion Poussendre to spend a pleasant holiday with her husband and children.
She loved Jean-Jacques Rousseau and came with his family on a pilgrimage to the tomb of the latter.
Suspected of royalism, denounced by Danton, she was locked during five months in Sainte-Pelagie, with other artists of La Comédie Française.
Unfortunately, after a quiet period, worries began again. Intense work, many emotions, five births, some minor accidents and a delicate chest eventually to undermine the health of Mrs. Dulomboy.
The performances at the theater became rare and she devoted herself to art education of his children. Nevertheless, her great courage couldn't overcome the disease and Marie Joly died of a chest, May 5, 1798, surrounded by her family in her home rue Saint-Honoré, in Paris. She was 37 years old.

Last tribute
The premature death of Marie Joly dismayed the world of theater and the Saint-Quentin people. The newspapers and literary journals of the time made her apology.
Mr. Dulomboy choosed the highest mountain point, according to the desire of his lost beloved.
On June 3, 1798, a huge crowd was attending the funeral of the actress. Mr. Poupinet, sub-prefect of Cliff delivered a beautiful eulogy.
The catafalque, surrounded by the authorities and the National Guard, disappeared beneath the flowers.
The ceremony was very moving. Mr. Dulomboy, weeping, was accompanied by his five children, the youngest in the arms of his nurse.

Several months later, M.Dulomboy erected a monument on the exact model of the one of Jean-Jacques Rousseau by using the same artist: Lesueur.
On the east side, Marie Joly is represented lying on her side and on the west side, Mr. Dulomboy had engraved an epitaph:
"Here lies: Marie-Elisabeth Joly Dulomboy wife, the best mother, the sweetest and most sensitive woman, the tenderest of wives. Nature lover, famous artist, she died in Paris on sixteen Floreal, year VI (5 May 1798), aged 37.
"Men, have respect for her ashes." Alongside the monument are two pilasters decorated with figurines foot : Thalia shedding tears and Melpomene holding a book.
This place is now guarded by Mrs. Kermaëdic, whose family was chosen by M. Fouquet-Dulomboy to take care of the burial. A lease was indeed found and the keys were handed over to Mr. Adolphe Bouquerel, July 13, 1908, with the task of maintaining the gardens and monuments inside the tomb.
Today many tourists visit this place, under the leadership of Mrs. Kermaêdic.
