L'Hôtel-Dieu Media Library
The Hotel Dieu today Media library!
The Hotel-Dieu was founded in 1201 by Heute Bertin and his brothers, rich drapers from Falaise, who were anxious to help the poorest people around their city, the sick and the elderly.
In 1204, the "sick room" was built, the large Gothic hall with three similar naves (same width, same height). This room was designed to receive the sick, and it is likely that at this time the beds, whith several patients were lined up in two aisles, the nave is dedicated to the movement and activities of the nursing staff and religious. Such an arrangement is currently visible to the "Hospices de Beaune" in Burgundy.
In 1764, because the old Hotel-Dieu was inadequate and outdated, repairs and reconstructions took place. At this period, it appears that this great "sick room" was converted into a chapel, until the Second World War.
In 1944, during the bombing of June, the medieval "sick room", (one of the few that still existed in France), was almost completely destroyed.
From 1960-70, the Hotel Dieu was rebuilt and restored to its original state using the remaining orginal elements.
Today, the Hotel Dieu is used as a media library
