Saint-Vigor Chapel

Located only 6 km West of Falaise on the road to Pont d’Ouilly, The rustic Chapel of St Vigor is famous for its frescoes, created by Japanese Artist Kyoji TAKUBO

A little history

The chapel, built in the 15th century by nobleman William of Vanembras, fits into the surrounding farm and has undergone many changes through the ages. Members of the Vanembras family were buried inside the nave until 1737. A small cemetery surrounds the chapel, where some tombstone are still visible.

By 1983, the chapel was falling to ruins and sealed off from the public. However, during his first visit in 1987, Japanese artist Kyoji TAKUBO fell under the chapel's charm and decided to turn it into a contemporary art masterpiece. He started his work in 1992.

Takubo’s work

By 1993, the chapel's framework was restored and the rooftop was covered in colorful glass tiles. A steel floor was laid and walls dressed with metal leaves on which the artist created his paintings. This contemporary creation by Takubo has since become a symbolic place of French –Japanese collaboration and cultural exchanges.
