Livet Mining Museum

Discover the subterranean world of Falaise

mine2At Saint-Germain-le-Vasson (between Falaise and Caen), there exists perfectly preserved evidence of ancient iron mines in Soumont. The Carreau du Livet is still the only site accessible to the public. It displays huge wheeled engines and rails recovered from the mines depths, along with the miner's original tools. The museum also boasts the region last "hung room" with the showers and the lamps in their original configuration, and the descent road leading staff to 650 meters underground.

Since 2003, a new design called "The subterranean world of Calvados" offers the visitor a fascinating trip through the tunnels. The exhibition offers the public a presentation of the local geological resources, an evocation of their exploitation in mines and quarries, an opening on caving and a descent into virtual mine located within 475 meters.
Surrounded by forest paths, the Carreau du Livet is an ideal place for walks and short hikes, but also for relaxation and picnics in the shade by the river.
